Oral sex

How we interpret dreams

Oral sex in a dream: what does it mean?

This appears in dreams as often as any other sexual content, which is to say frequently, and it carries no meaning beyond itself unless the dream supplies one.

How do the four traditions read it?

Each reading below comes from a named tradition and a cited source, so you can see where it came from and decide what fits your dream. The four often disagree, and that is the point: a symbol rarely means one fixed thing, and the distance between Freud, Jung, modern research and myth tells you more than any single verdict could.

Freud

Freud placed the mouth first in his developmental sequence and would connect the two, which is either illuminating or the whole trouble with the method depending on your view of it.

After Freud, Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality (Brill trans., 1910), public domain.

Jung

A Jungian reading would be more interested in who was giving and who receiving than in the act, since that asymmetry is usually where the feeling in these dreams sits.

Our summary of a Jungian reading, in our own words, not Jung's. See Jung, ed., Man and His Symbols (1964).

Modern

Sexual dreams are among the most frequently reported types in every large survey, and the specific content varies without carrying any diagnostic weight. Dreaming something is not wanting it, and dreaming it about a particular person is not a message about that person.

Our summary of the typical-dreams literature. See Nielsen et al., Dreaming 13(4), 2003, 211-235.

Mythological

Traditions vary and the record is patchier than the confident modern generalisations suggest, largely because this is exactly the sort of thing that was not written down.

How can writers use this symbol?

The same symbol, read as craft material rather than as a dream. What it does on the page, how genres use it differently, and what happens when you turn it inside out. Written for novelists, screenwriters and poets who need the symbol to actually work, and it ends with something to try.

In literature

The subject separates books that are frank from books that are performing frankness, and the difference is usually visible in the sentence rhythm rather than in the vocabulary. There is also a long history of censorship deciding what could be written here, and the shape of that history is still visible in which authors are considered daring for scenes that would now pass without comment.

What it does in a story

It puts two characters in an asymmetry of attention, which is more revealing than the act itself.

Genre conventions

Literary fiction goes quiet and specific. Genre fiction goes loud and general, and loses the scene.

How to subvert it

Write the conversation immediately afterwards and nothing else.

Try this

Write two hundred words in which the most interesting thing is what one of them is thinking about.

Only the first of these names a source. What a symbol does in a story, how genres treat it, how to invert it and what to try are our editorial judgement as writers and editors, not findings from a body of research. They are offered as craft opinion and should be argued with.

This is a starting point to think with, not a verdict. Your own associations matter most.

If distressing nightmares keep returning, it can help to talk them over with a doctor or therapist.

Interpretations are adapted in our own words from public-domain sources, including G. H. Miller, Ten Thousand Dreams Interpreted (1901), Freud (Brill translation, 1913), and Artemidorus, with cross-cultural context from Bulfinch and others. Jungian and modern-cognitive entries are original summaries of those ideas. See the bibliography for full sources.
