What does it mean to dream about coal?
Coal often pictures stored energy and worth held in a dark and plain form, fuel waiting to be burned, or value that is not obvious at a glance.
Four ways to read it
Each reading below comes from a named tradition and a cited source, so you can see where it came from and decide what fits your dream.
Freud
Freud would read coal as fuel held in reserve, dark matter that carries hidden heat. It can stand for energy or feeling stored away, plain in look yet able to burn fiercely once kindled.
After Freud, The Interpretation of Dreams (Brill trans., 1913), public domain.Jung
Jung might see coal as worth that lies hidden in a dark and unpromising form, made by long pressure over time. Like the black stone that holds fire, it can mark value waiting to be drawn out of what looks unremarkable.
Jungian concept (our summary).Modern
The continuity view ties coal to waking thoughts of effort stored, resources held back, or warmth and work needed in a hard season. What you do with the lump usually carries the meaning.
Continuity hypothesis (our summary).Mythological
Coal and ember carried omen in folk belief, a black coal foretelling ill in some customs and a living ember kept burning as the luck of the hearth. The plain dark fuel was treated as holding more than it showed.
