What does it mean to dream about three?
Three often points to completeness or a pattern coming together, the trinity, beginning and middle and end, or growth out of a pair.
Four ways to read it
Each reading below comes from a named tradition and a cited source, so you can see where it came from and decide what fits your dream.
Freud
Freud would read three with attention to family and the early triangle of child and parents. He also noted that three can carry symbolic charge, standing in for the body or for a wish hidden in a familiar grouping.
After Freud, The Interpretation of Dreams (Brill trans., 1913), public domain.Jung
Jung saw three as a dynamic number, movement and synthesis, though he often felt it pointed beyond itself toward a missing fourth and true wholeness. It can mark a process underway rather than fully settled.
Jungian concept (our summary).Modern
Continuity ties three to waking groupings, a family of three, three options, or a sequence you are working through. Ask what in your day arrived as a set of three.
Continuity hypothesis (our summary).Mythological
Three runs deep through myth and folklore, the triple goddess, the three wishes, the three trials a hero must pass. It is the storyteller's number of pattern and fulfilment.
