What does it mean to dream about tears?
Tears often point to release and grief, the feeling that asks to be let out, or to relief after something held in too long.
Four ways to read it
Each reading below comes from a named tradition and a cited source, so you can see where it came from and decide what fits your dream.
Freud
Freud would read tears as the discharge of feeling that words could not carry, an emotion finding its way out. Weeping in a dream can release a sorrow the waking self has kept in check.
After Freud, The Interpretation of Dreams (Brill trans., 1913), public domain.Jung
Jung would see the honest expression of feeling and the beginning of cleansing, the self letting grief move through it. Tears can mark a softening that allows something to heal.
Jungian concept (our summary).Modern
Continuity ties tears to waking sadness, relief, or strong emotion of any kind. They often surface after days of grief held back, or of feeling more than one could show.
Continuity hypothesis (our summary).Mythological
Tears fill rivers and wells in old story, and the weeping of goddesses turns to amber or to flowers in the telling. Across cultures they are the water of grief and the mark of a heart truly moved.
