What does it mean to dream about raft?
A raft often pictures a fragile, makeshift crossing, staying afloat on open water with only what you could lash together.
Four ways to read it
Each reading below comes from a named tradition and a cited source, so you can see where it came from and decide what fits your dream.
Freud
Freud, who read water as the medium of feeling, might see the raft as a slight defence against being overwhelmed, just enough to keep you above it. He could ask what current you are riding and how secure the footing feels.
After Freud, The Interpretation of Dreams (Brill trans., 1913), public domain.Jung
Jung might see the raft as the self crossing the unconscious with improvised means, trusting a frail craft over deep water. The image can speak of resourcefulness amid uncertainty.
Jungian concept (our summary).Modern
Continuity links rafts to survival stories, water trips, or feeling that you are managing with too little. The dream may echo a time of getting by on whatever is to hand.
Continuity hypothesis (our summary).Mythological
Across cultures the survivor borne over the flood on a frail craft appears in the oldest deluge tales. It is an old image of endurance carried on the water between one shore and another.
