What does it mean to dream about love?
Love in a dream usually carries warmth, longing, or connection, and the person it attaches to may matter less than the feeling itself and what it reminds you of.
Four ways to read it
Each reading below comes from a named tradition and a cited source, so you can see where it came from and decide what fits your dream.
Freud
Freud would read dream love as desire finding expression, sometimes for the obvious person and sometimes as a stand-in for another longing. He held that affection in sleep can draw on feeling that reaches back to early life. The dream lets a wish be felt without consequence.
After Freud, The Interpretation of Dreams (Brill trans., 1913), public domain.Jung
Jung would see love as a pull toward wholeness, often through a figure who carries a missing part of the self. He linked romantic feeling in dreams to the anima or animus, the inner counterpart we project outward. The feeling can mark a meeting of two sides within.
Jungian concept (our summary).Modern
Continuity research ties dream love to waking bonds and the people who hold our attention and care. Dreaming seems to keep our close relationships in view, rehearsing closeness and its absence. What the warmth recalls in your own life is the place to start.
Continuity hypothesis (our summary).Mythological
Eros and Aphrodite gave love a face that could heal or undo, and many myths set love against fate, as with Orpheus reaching for Eurydice. The feeling was treated as a power on the scale of the gods. Across cultures it binds the living and reaches even into the land of the dead.
