What does it mean to dream about engagement?
An engagement in a dream often reflects a real or hoped-for commitment, or the wish to bind yourself to a person, path, or promise.
Four ways to read it
Each reading below comes from a named tradition and a cited source, so you can see where it came from and decide what fits your dream.
Freud
Freud would look for the wish behind the promise, perhaps a longing for union, for security, or for a particular person. He might also see the anxiety that can shadow a binding choice. The dream lets a desire and its doubts appear together.

Jung might read an engagement as the joining of two parts of the self, a promise to bring them together toward wholeness. The other person can stand for a quality the dreamer is moving toward. He would ask what is being committed to.
Jungian concept (our summary).Modern
Under the continuity view, engagement dreams often follow real relationships, decisions about the future, or thoughts about commitment of any kind. The mind keeps working on the pull toward binding choices. The feeling in the dream tends to mirror the waking one.
Continuity hypothesis (our summary).Mythological
Many traditions ringed betrothal with rites and tokens, treating the promise as a sacred bond before the marriage itself. Stories of pledged unions and the tests that followed recur across cultures. The promise to wed was held to be a passage in its own right.
