Eclipse

What does it mean to dream about eclipse?

An eclipse often stands for something hidden or overshadowed, a time when a familiar light is briefly blocked and the order of things feels uncertain.

Four ways to read it

Each reading below comes from a named tradition and a cited source, so you can see where it came from and decide what fits your dream.

Freud

Freud would look at what is being blotted out, often a guiding figure or a part of the self temporarily cast in shadow. The darkening of a familiar light can carry both fear and relief. What returns afterward is telling.

Jung

Jung would see one principle eclipsing another, the conscious and unconscious or masculine and feminine briefly overlapping. It can mark a rare alignment or a temporary loss of a guiding light. The shadow passes, but it marks the moment.

Modern

Continuity ties an eclipse to waking feelings of something important being obscured or a familiar source of light withdrawn. It can follow a time when a guide or certainty dimmed. The unease usually lifts as the dream moves on.

Mythological

Eclipses were read as omens across the ancient world, the sun or moon swallowed by a beast or stolen by an enemy. Kings feared them and astronomers learned to predict them. They marked a rupture in the expected order of the heavens.

If distressing nightmares keep returning, it can help to talk them over with a doctor or therapist.

Interpretations are adapted in our own words from public-domain sources, including G. H. Miller, Ten Thousand Dreams Interpreted (1901), Freud (Brill translation, 1913), and Artemidorus, with cross-cultural context from Bulfinch and others. Jungian and modern-cognitive entries are original summaries of those ideas. See the bibliography for full sources.
