What does it mean to dream about jaw?
A jaw often points to determination and what you bite down on, the strength to hold firm, or tension carried silently through clenched effort.
Four ways to read it
Each reading below comes from a named tradition and a cited source, so you can see where it came from and decide what fits your dream.
Freud
Freud would read the jaw as the seat of biting and of held speech, where aggression and restraint meet. A locked or broken jaw can mark anger that cannot be voiced or a wish kept clenched inside.
After Freud, The Interpretation of Dreams (Brill trans., 1913), public domain.Jung
Jung would see the jaw as a sign of the will and its tensions, the set strength one brings to a struggle. A failing jaw may mark a feeling that one's grip on a hard situation is slipping.
Jungian concept (our summary).Modern
Continuity ties the jaw to waking stress, since many people clench it under strain and carry the day's pressure there. Dreams of jaw trouble often follow stretches of held-back anger or tension.
Continuity hypothesis (our summary).Mythological
The jawbone was a weapon and a wonder in old story, the bone with which a strong man laid his enemies low. The jaws of a beast or of the underworld stood across cultures for the threshold of danger.
