What does it mean to dream about sunset?
A sunset usually points to an ending or a winding-down, a beautiful close to a chapter, tinged with rest and sometimes with loss.
Four ways to read it
Each reading below comes from a named tradition and a cited source, so you can see where it came from and decide what fits your dream.
Freud
Freud would look at what is ending and how you feel about its passing, whether the dream holds peace or reluctance to let the light go. Dusk can carry a quiet wish to rest or to hold on. The mood is the clue.
After Freud, The Interpretation of Dreams (Brill trans., 1913), public domain.Jung
Jung would see the natural turn of a cycle, the day declining toward night and the self toward reflection. It can mark the later phase of a stage of life. Endings in this light are part of a larger round.
Jungian concept (our summary).Modern
Continuity ties a sunset to waking thoughts of closure, calm, or the passing of time. It often follows the completion of something or a wistful mood. The feeling is usually gentle rather than sharp.
Continuity hypothesis (our summary).Mythological
The setting sun was the sun god's nightly descent into the underworld, a death from which he rose again at dawn. The west became the land of the dead in many traditions. Dusk was the threshold between day and the world below.
