What does it mean to dream about hail?
Hail often pictures a harsh or sudden battering, small troubles or hard words coming fast from a sky that had seemed only grey.
Four ways to read it
Each reading below comes from a named tradition and a cited source, so you can see where it came from and decide what fits your dream.
Freud
Freud would read the stinging fall as a feeling that strikes from outside, sharp and repeated, that one can only endure. It can stand for criticism or sudden hardship. The wish to take shelter is part of it.
After Freud, The Interpretation of Dreams (Brill trans., 1913), public domain.Jung
Jung would see frozen rain, feeling turned hard and cutting, a coldness that falls rather than warms. It can mark a time of harshness from within or without. The ice will melt, but the blows are felt first.
Jungian concept (our summary).Modern
Continuity ties hail to waking experiences of being battered by many small hard things at once. It often follows a run of setbacks or sharp exchanges. The dream mirrors the feeling of being pelted.
Continuity hypothesis (our summary).Mythological
Storms of hail were sent as plagues and punishments in scripture and myth, a weapon flung from the sky against the unworthy. They ruined crops and routed armies. Hail marked the heavens turned hostile.
