Jung might see the lost child as a project, a hope, or a tender new part of the self that feels at risk. The image can hold real grief or a wider fear that something cherished will not come to be. He would ask gently what the dreamer felt was fragile.

Under the continuity view, these dreams commonly follow waking worry, past loss, or the weight of carrying a hope. The mind replays what it is grieving or afraid of. If the subject is heavy in waking life, it is natural for it to return in sleep.

Many cultures kept rites of mourning for a child not carried to term, and folklore held figures who watched over mothers and the very young. These customs gave a place for grief that words could not hold. They named the loss rather than hiding it.
