What does it mean to dream about black?

Freud would read black as the dream's way of veiling or muting, the colour of what is not seen or not spoken. He might ask what the darkness covered and whether it brought dread or quiet. The hidden, for him, was often the most telling.

Jung linked black to the unconscious and to the shadow, the part of the self not yet brought to light. It can read as fear or loss, but also as the fertile dark from which new things rise. Whether it frightened or steadied you is part of the meaning.

Under the continuity view, black often follows from waking thoughts of grief, the unknown, or things felt as ominous. It can also simply mean night, rest, or a plain black object from your day. Begin with the feeling the colour carried for you.

Black was widely the colour of mourning and of the underworld, worn for the dead and given to the gods of night and the grave. Yet it was also the rich dark of fertile earth and the womb of beginnings in some traditions. Ending and origin met in it.
