Yellow

What does it mean to dream about yellow?

Yellow often suggests brightness, warmth, and energy, though in some readings it edges toward caution or unease.

Four ways to read it

Each reading below comes from a named tradition and a cited source, so you can see where it came from and decide what fits your dream.

Freud

Freud would treat yellow as part of a dream's feeling rather than a fixed meaning, asking what it lit and how you felt. It might carry the warmth of the sun or, depending on the scene, a note of unease. The colour leans on its surroundings.

Jung

Jung associated yellow with light, intuition, and the energy of the sun, the brightest and most radiant of colours. It can mean clarity and warmth, or, in a darker mood, cowardice or sickness. Notice whether the yellow felt golden and alive or pale and sickly.

Modern

Under the continuity view, yellow often follows from a bright or energetic waking mood, or sometimes from caution and worry. It may also carry over a yellow object or scene from your day. What the colour means to you points the way.

Mythological

Yellow and gold were long the colours of the sun and of the gods who carried its light, signs of glory and the imperishable. Yet the same colour could mark sickness or betrayal in other settings, the two faces of a strong hue. Its meaning has always turned on its shade.

If distressing nightmares keep returning, it can help to talk them over with a doctor or therapist.

Interpretations are adapted in our own words from public-domain sources, including G. H. Miller, Ten Thousand Dreams Interpreted (1901), Freud (Brill translation, 1913), and Artemidorus, with cross-cultural context from Bulfinch and others. Jungian and modern-cognitive entries are original summaries of those ideas. See the bibliography for full sources.
