What does it mean to dream about salt?
Salt usually points to value, preservation, and what gives a thing savour, and sometimes to a sense of loss or bitterness.
Four ways to read it
Each reading below comes from a named tradition and a cited source, so you can see where it came from and decide what fits your dream.
Freud
Freud would read salt by its associations, the savour that makes food worth eating or the tears and sweat it can stand for. It can carry the idea of what gives life its sharpness. Too much may turn the savour to something bitter.
After Freud, The Interpretation of Dreams (Brill trans., 1913), public domain.Jung
Jung took a keen interest in salt as a symbol of wisdom won through suffering and of the essence left when the rest is burned away. It can mark hard-earned understanding or the bitterness that teaches. Your own feeling about its taste is the lead.
Jungian concept (our summary).Modern
Continuity ties salt to waking thoughts of value, taste, and the small things that make a difference. It may follow a meal or a moment of loss recalled as tears. Spilled salt can also bring in a passing superstition or sense of bad luck.
Continuity hypothesis (our summary).Mythological
Salt was so prized it paid wages and sealed covenants, and to share it was to bind a bond of friendship. Spilled salt was an ill omen across folklore, and the pillar of salt marked the cost of looking back.
