Wall

What does it mean to dream about wall?

A wall often stands for an obstacle, a boundary, or a defence, something that blocks the way or keeps things apart.

Four ways to read it

Each reading below comes from a named tradition and a cited source, so you can see where it came from and decide what fits your dream.

Freud

Freud would read the wall as resistance, the barrier the mind raises against a wish or against what it does not want to face. To be stopped by it can mark an inner block. Note whether you climb it, breach it, or turn back.

Jung

Jung might see the wall as a boundary within the self, a defence that protects but can also confine, dividing what is known from what is shut out. Breaking through can mean growth. Ask what the wall is keeping in or out.

Modern

Under the continuity view, a wall often reflects a waking obstacle or limit, a problem you cannot get past or a boundary you have set. The feeling of being blocked is the message. Consider where you have hit a wall in your life.

Mythological

Great walls in story both protect and divide, the rampart that keeps the city safe and the barrier that shuts out the stranger. To breach the wall is a turning point in many sieges. The wall marks the line between worlds.

If distressing nightmares keep returning, it can help to talk them over with a doctor or therapist.

Interpretations are adapted in our own words from public-domain sources, including G. H. Miller, Ten Thousand Dreams Interpreted (1901), Freud (Brill translation, 1913), and Artemidorus, with cross-cultural context from Bulfinch and others. Jungian and modern-cognitive entries are original summaries of those ideas. See the bibliography for full sources.
